Welcome to BOHOL TE AMO, exquisitely otherwise known as "I love you, Bohol." It's solely a personal definition of what this blog is.

This blog exists because of my unexplainable devotion and love for this wonderful place which I call home and which for many years has helped mold me into the person I am today, and not to forget the fact that most all of the people I love, care for and am friends with, live and are from this beautiful island which my dear Cajun friend once called, not paradise, but "an accent of heaven."

A BACKGROUNDER

For someone who wasn't born in Bohol and still claim a tag of being a "proud Bol-anon" is hardly conceivable but not totally impossible in spite of the spite Boholanos sometimes underservedly get for just being Boholanos, much like as it were in Biblical timeframe where Jesus was at times accused of and being mocked for being a Nazarene himself as the perception during his days run something like this, "Is there anything good coming out of Nazareth?" "Is there anything good coming out of Bohol?" That I've heard so many times many years back as a young person as if coming from Bohol or being a Boholano is a curse unto itself or, again, a tag that one needed to shy away from or be ashamed of. Even without academic evidence of scientific studies supporting such belief or claim but it's almost safe to say that there were those who avoided being teased upon or mocked (in a good way, if there's such a thing as good mockery?) in front of many that you knew you were at a wrong place at a wrong time. Of course, I known people myself who dreaded such a nametag that they even ended up lying, i.e., claiming a different domicile or region-of-origin when asked such a question. I never understood why but I had my suspicions why they did.

And here comes the innocent me, a totally different bred, one who never spoke a hint of Bol-anon before the age of five, who had never set foot on this beautiful paradise since the last time God first thought of him long way after the Garden of Eden drama (confused already? LoL), who in youthful innocense had no clue where his lineage orginated from, and whose dad and mom were still fighting over the idea whether raising children is best served somewhere other than the big city or in the city itself, even when in those years big cities, including Manila, were still relatively primitive in comparison to the current millenium's definition of an 'urbis.'

MY BOHOL... OH MY

There's something about Bohol I most love: the locale. The candid appearance and the degree of simplicity that the place and its people have impressed on me has for many years been the deciding factor why I prefer to be a Boholano and chose Bohol to be my permament home in spite of the fact that I was only raised here and lived more than half of my life outside its premises having been born somewhere else, went to school up north and finally found my niche in a place far away, almost half the distance of the globe's circumference.

The experiences and memories Bohol etched in my innermost psyche and persona no doubt have played and made all the difference in how I see, view and deal with the people and the world around me even as far-reaching as the "other" and "new' culture I came to be a part of. Yet, I so notice that Bohol and my being a Boholano have always remained intact within me and have not left a trace of unbroken affection and adoration for this once-insignificant-homeland (as many alleged) which seemed to be the very antithesis of what I view many true-blooded Boholanos - those birthed in Bohol that I came to know of - have to struggle with even as they have left only their own poor little town or humdrum province en route for a more exciting, and I guess greener, opportunities and lifestyle of the big suburbia, sometimes not even a hundred miles away.

What is my point here? What is it I'm trying to say? Hmmm...

MY TAGBILARAN CITY

A lyrical expression and titling on a subject like Tagbilaran is something I never thought would ever come in my lifetime nor at a distant future. Having written songs the past thirty years doesn't make the task any easier nor gives me the privilege and know-how to do it. The word Tagbilaran is as sophisticated as any I find out there and thought is better served if it remains a state of mind (much like my 3rd or 4th fav'rite city, New York (see Billy Joel). Hmmm, what a thought. But it was exactly on one surreal moment - and mode at that - that this poetry came to be as one's imagination sometimes would like us to think or look at. It was there, in the deep recesses of my visual exploration that I had the guts to even put this into writing and call, MY TAGBILARAN CITY.

It feels like a dream
A quiet I couldn't quite figure out just yet
A moment of silence that is
On a journey I know not the direction.

Peoples and machines moving thoughtlessly

This page is a personal tribute to the song DAMGO MAN LANG - written by two confreres of mine when I was in the seminary many years back - that affirms the musicality of the Boholano as well as the Paring Bol-anon who have championed and captured the imagination of many throughout the world with their musical versatility as well as performances, but specifically the so-called innate talents Boholanos are known for in creative arts as evidenced by their knack of making original music.

(August 23, 2009) - But Bohol today is altogether a different story and Bol-anons a different bred. Don't take it from me. Just you be keen and observant. And objective, too.

Anywhere you go on the airwaves today, be it the information highway, Filipino channels or some local stations, the endless praise and word-of-mouth account people and visitors alike on Bohol have gone way beyond imagining like thirty or so years ago. Bohol is nowhere near the Nazareth of Biblical long-ago or the domicile locals used to shylly acknowledged , but has become more of a household name, a celebrity locale, a destination one shoots for in a lifetime, and, for a deeply-rooted Bol-anon, a place and home that he or she takes pride in, not with what used-to-be-a-chip-on-one's-shoulder but rather a sweet-sounding-music-to-my-ear self-proclaimed conceit: "I'm a Boholano, a Boholana, from the Republic of Bohol."

BOHOL BANDS ON SOUNDCLICK (STATION)

Little did I know until late that Boholano bands have already been making waves as well as headlines on the internet highway, specifically music communities like MySpace, Soundclick and IMEEM, and I have actually seen them in quite a number of video snippets on YouTube and VEOH. So here's a playlist I've created at IMEEM, which I hope y'all get a chance to listen to. I'd say they're quite a spectacular group of musicians... considering how laidback we are in terms of modern recording studios, much less the acquisition of more sophisticated softwares, vis-à-vis recording and mastering, that are not copies or pirated (LoL).

CATHY REMPERAS - BOHOL'S NEWEST STAR

THIS PAGE IS ONLY SIMPLE BOHOLANO VIDEO TRIBUTE

We all know her as a bread and butter Boholana, raised and educated in the beautiful island Province of Bohol. Although she was originally born in Zamboanga, her heart and mind is "consciously" Bol-anon all the way. She and her family has a storied past but is not something to be embarrased or shameful about, but rather - with chin up - a lesson everyone can learn from... that with will and determination, strong and constant familial love and support, persistence and endurance... one is almost assured to survive the forest out there. To make the long story short, our very own CATHY REMPERAS, what with her newest accomplishments in life, can only serve as an example for many. She is certainly someone our young people can emulate with grace or even look up to as a role model as they, too, embark on his or her own journey in life.

FROM THE CD LINER:

The thought of putting together a music album for my 25th priestly anniversary was almost a laughable idea. First, I don't believe I can really sing even though I love to sing (And, yes, I am proud of my singing!). Second, I thought the idea of me recording songs, like I did in the mid-90s, had become almost obsolete after I lost all my recording gears during the flood caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Worse yet, that very same year, months before the storm, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer; and the succeeding surgery almost took care of my penchant for singing because I lost my voice for almost four months. I never thought I'd be able to sing again. I could only thank the good Lord for giving me back my voice even if it meant I wouldn't be singing again. Who would have thought I'd be singing again (sans the off-keys here and there), and, more so for my silver jubilee.

Celebrating 25 years of priesthood brings to mind a lot of things. Good things. Tremendous blessings! The gift of faith, the privilege of priesthood, two wonderful parents in mom and dad, nine wonderful siblings, a strong family orientation from both sides of my family - grandparents, uncles and aunts and cousins to the _th degree. Hordes of them! Not to forget the many bishops and priests who have been my inspiration, mentors and brothers over the years, the parishioners from my former and current parishes. And friends - I’m proud to have some of the best around - for support and friendship along the way. And to the ones who showered all these wondrous gifts on me, our Almighty God and Father, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (the Big Boss), the Spirit “helper” and “guide,” and, last but not least, our Blessed Mother, whose insistence and invitation made me say my own "fiat." To all of you I say my biggest THANK YOU! (Fr. Roel)
